So many Americans are dealing with cold weather right now, so we decided to show you a quick clip that just might make you feel better about the conditions in your hometown! Last night, I was complaining about the 5-degree temperatures in New York City. Believe it or not, 5 degrees is a "nice weather" day at McMurdo Station in Antarctica.
McMurdo Station is a United States research center on the tip of Ross Island in Antarctica. The desolate station is fairly sheltered by the surrounding hills, which makes it the epicenter of extreme weather. In Antarctica, there are three ways people classify the weather: Condition 3 (nice weather!), Condition 2 (not so nice) and Condition 1…which you get a taste of when researcher Christine opens the door.
What defines these cold weather conditions? According to Wikipedia:
Condition 3: Normal! Air temperature and wind chill are generally above -75 degrees.
Condition 2: Not-so-normal… Air temperature and wind chill are in the below -75 and above -100 degrees.
Condition 1: Yikes!! Visibility less than 100 feet, temperature and wind chill below -100 degrees!!
Please SHARE this extreme weather situation with anyone you know who has ever complained about the frosty weather. Talk about perspective!
