I Rubbed A Charcoal Jelly Ball Cleanser On My Face For A Week To Try Curing My Dry Skin

Even though I have a drawer in my bathroom dedicated to skincare products, I am the first to admit that I get lazy when it comes to my nightly skincare routine. Don't get me wrong: I love how soft and smooth my skin feels after a face mask or a simple cleanser, but after a long day at work, it's easier to brush my teeth and pass out than it is to spend 10 minutes in front of the sink washing my face.

As lazy as I am, nothing bothers me more than a painful pimple, so recently I've been on the hunt for a cleanser that will open and clear my pores without taking hours to do so.

While doing some research, I came across a charcoal jelly ball cleanser that claims to clear pores and cure dry skin in just minutes.

Users of this jelly ball cleanser rave that it is "super gentle and soothing" and "super fun to use," so I decided to test out the unique ball-shaped cleanser for myself. After all, I'll try anything if it means getting to bed faster at night.

What Is The Charcoal Jelly Ball Cleanser?

The Boscia Charcoal Jelly Ball Cleanser is a Sephora exclusive that gained popularity for its unusual shape and application technique.

Boscia is a brand known for its line of charcoal products, so its jelly ball cleanser quickly trended in the beauty community as a fun and fast alternative to traditional cleansers.

What Is The Charcoal Jelly Ball Cleanser Supposed To Do?

According to the product description, the Boscia jelly ball cleanser is supposed to clean pores and balance the skin with the help of its main ingredient, activated black bamboo charcoal.

According to Allure, the activated charcoal acts like a magnet to dirt and oil, working to clear the pores. In an interview with Allure, Boscia product development director Michelle Fry also noted that the ball shape of the cleanser is meant to "target areas that are prone to issues."

Made without preservatives and artificial fragrance, this charcoal cleanser is ideal for dry, oily, and sensitive skin types.

How To Use The Charcoal Jelly Ball Cleanser

The instructions for using the charcoal jelly ball cleanser are as follows:

  1. Peel off tape around plastic-enclosed jelly ball. Using provided pick, puncture jelly ball in plastic encasement from seal-covered hole at top of ball to break balloon.
  2. Remove top plastic lid, then discard balloon remnants from ball.
  3. To cleanse, remove jelly ball from bottom plastic base and massage it directly over wet face in gentle, circular motions; or, wet ball, lather in hands, and massage product onto face with fingertips.
  4. Rinse face clean with warm water and place jelly ball back into bottom plastic base or top plastic lid to dry.

Even though I only used the cleanser at night, you can use it in the morning and/or at night, depending on your preferences. If all goes well, the ball should last around 45 days, and will slowly shrink as you use it.

Also, make sure not to use this product if you have a latex allergy, as this cleanser does contain latex!

My Skin Before Using The Charcoal Jelly Ball Cleanser

For the most part, I can't complain about my skin. I struggle with the occasional blemish like any girl, but for the most part, my skin is relatively clear (knock on wood).

However, one problem that I do struggle with is dry skin, especially as the weather starts to cool down and the wind starts to pick up. My hope was that the charcoal jelly ball cleanser would get me into bed faster and also

prevent my skin from chapping and drying up in the fall and winter months.

The Experiment Day 1

All the skin benefits aside, this jelly ball felt like an angel's hands on my skin. Am I being hyperbolic? Maybe. But I've never enjoyed cleaning my face as much as I did with this jelly ball cleanser. It was just plain fun!

I didn't really understand where the soap would come from when I first examined the ball (would it just spurt out of the ball magically?), but once the jelly ball made contact with my wet face, it somehow turned sudsy and frothy and created a nice layer of soap for a deep cleanse.

Day 2

Day two using the charcoal jelly cleanser went off without a hitch. With the temperature outside uncharacteristically warm for mid-September, I was excited to come home and cleanse my skin of the sweat and dirt it accumulated throughout the day!

Day 3

I didn't notice many changes on day three, either negative or positive. My skin felt normal as usual, so I continued using the charcoal ball to see if I would notice any major changes after a week of application.

Days 4 And 5

Day four was relatively normal, but on day five, I started to notice that some of my problem areas were slightly starting to act out. This didn't surprise me, though, since the pore cleansing process brings the bacteria to the surface and sometimes involves a few pimples — this even happens with professional facials!

Day 6

By day six, the pimples were already starting to clear up, and my skin was returning to its normal, relatively clear state. I have sensitive skin, so I was surprised how well my face responded to the charcoal cleanser!

Day 7

By day seven, using the charcoal ball cleanser had become a part of my nightly routine, just like brushing my teeth. Because the entire cleansing process only takes a few minutes, it didn't feel like a chore to use the ball cleanser every night.

Day 8

I can't say that I notice a significant difference in my skin compared to day one. For the most part, my skin stayed relatively clear, but it didn't feel any better or worse after a week of using the charcoal jelly ball cleanser.

Final Thoughts

Did it work?

Even though I didn't notice any significant changes to my skin, I would say that this product did what it's supposed to do by cleansing my pores and hydrating my skin. I have sensitive skin and tend to break out whenever I try new products, so it was nice to find a new product that didn't create a negative reaction on my face!

Do you recommend it?

Yes! Not only does this product work to soften and clear the skin, but it's so fun and easy to use! If anything, this is your typical cleanser in a much more convenient packaging. At $20, the price is a little steep for only 45 days of use (see the image above for how much my ball shrank after just seven days), but it's worth it if you're serious about your skincare routine.

Is there anyone who should avoid this product?

As I mentioned before, anyone with a latex allergy should avoid this product. However, I otherwise think this is a good product for people with dry or oily skin!
