Woman Grieving Stillborn Baby Asks To Buy Stranger’s Cake And Her Request Crushes Publix Worker

Nick DeClemente was working behind the bakery counter at a Publix grocery store in Jacksonville, Florida. During his shift, a woman approached the counter with a very odd-sounding question.

The woman asked if there were any birthday cakes scheduled for pickup during the upcoming weekend. More specifically, she wanted to know if there were any orders for a child's first birthday.

Confused, Nick asked if she had any specific person or order in mind — but no, she didn't.

"I want to pay for one anonymously," she said.

It wasn't long before the woman broke down crying, right there in the bakery department.

She went on to explain why she was there — and Nick was in such awe that he couldn't even speak.

He posted a photo on Facebook showing the original cake order beside the woman's receipt, along with a description of what had actually just happened…

One day in October 2018, Nick was working the bakery counter when he had an unexpected exchange with a customer that left a lasting mark on him… and now, so many others.

"A lady just came up to the bakery counter and asked if we had any 1st birthday cakes on order for Saturday or Sunday," Nick wrote in a now-viral Facebook post.

"She said she wanted to pay for one."

"I asked what the customer name was, thinking she was paying for a specific person.

"She said, 'No I want to pay for one anonymously.'"

"She then started to tear up and tell me that she had a stillborn [grand]child a year ago and in tribute to him she wanted to pay for someone else's cake."

"I went to the cake order drawer and found this one."

Nick pulled an order for a Sesame Street-themed cake for a local boy named David who was turning 1.

The woman happily paid for the $32.99 sheet cake.

"She told me 'thank you' and appreciated that I let her do this."

Nick says this was perhaps the most touching thing he'd ever seen in his 20+ years working retail.

The woman's gesture was even more emotional for him because his own wife was pregnant with their second child at the time.

Nick's post spread quickly, and he returned to his post with an update:

“I just wanted to offer my sincere thanks to every single person who has loved, liked, and shared this story. The attention has been unimaginable to me. I am inspired! That I have been used as a vessel to help share something so beautiful is such a blessing.”

That weekend, Kesha Campbell went to Publix to pick up her son David's cake in preparation for his 1st birthday.

When she went to pay for the order, however, she was told it had already been taken care of.

At first, Kesha told the employees there must've been a mistake. But the staff explained the unexpected act of kindness bestowed onto her and her family.

The BBC says that Kesha took the gesture as a blessing.

Kesha was able to track down the anonymous cake donor to thank her personally.

"God bless her heart and that beautiful baby soul."

It's amazing how such a devastating event led to such a selfless act of kindness, and restoration of humanity, for someone else.
