What to Know
At this point, several awkward or downright embarrassing moments from King Charles’ state visit to the United States have gone viral on social media. And, of course, most of them involve President Donald Trump saying or doing something that people found inappropriate. So, when Trump appeared to snub Queen Camilla, people were disgusted, but not necessarily surprised.
Still, people are trying to figure out why, when returning to the White House with King Charles and Queen Camilla, Trump cut in front of Camilla to greet… his own cabinet?
A clip of the awkward moment shows Trump walking right in front of Camilla and shaking people’s hands.
US President Donald Trump appeared to cut ahead of Queen Camilla during a greeting line, turning instead to shake hands with his cabinet members at the White House. Is this misstep or misunderstanding?

After a private welcome, Trump, his wife, King Charles, and Queen Camilla arrived at the White House and greeted the officials waiting for them on the South Lawn. The viral video shows Camilla extending her hand to greet U.S. officials—until she’s interrupted by Trump.
Trump administration officials such as Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were visible in the clip, leading some people on social media to believe that Trump stepped in front of Camilla just to greet his own cabinet members, which would be especially awkward. “Does he not recognise his own cabinet?” one person on Reddit questioned after seeing the clip. Some critics thought this interaction could be another possible sign of dementia. “To be fair he does have no idea that he already knows them,” someone else joked.
It also came across as very…improper.

Though not walking in front of the King and Queen is not official royal protocol, it is a widely accepted standard that people tend to follow, according to the Daily Beast. Royal protocol aside, people found Trump’s behavior pretty rude and inconsiderate.
Some people assumed that he unintentionally made the mistake because he’s “tacky” and “lacks class.” One Redditor wrote, “He doesn’t understand protocol and truly is just embarrassing that he is so self centered and doesn’t pay attention. Like read the room. Why would he be shaking hands with his OWN cabinet, it makes zero sense.”
A few people argued that Trump probably truly didn’t understand what was going on, either due to general obliviousness or his self-centeredness. “Trump doesn’t understand protocol,” someone else argued. “It interferes with his me first attitude.”
But others thought it seemed more deliberate.

While a lot of people could imagine Trump being clueless enough to make an embarrassing mistake like this, some thought he knew what he was doing. Perhaps, in that moment, Trump’s misogyny was showing, several critics argued.
“He’s just showing what he thinks about women,” a critic said. Someone else agreed that Trump “has very poor manners when it comes to how he ignores and dismisses women like they’re all a sex object or simply don’t exist.”
But maybe it’s also because Trump is used to being the center of attention, some theorized. “He wanted to be in front of the camera,” another person speculated. “Got tired of not being front and center and ‘corrected’ that.”
And since Trump loves to compare himself to Former President Joe Biden, people also couldn’t help but wonder how people would’ve reacted if Biden had done the same thing. “If Biden did this it would be in the news for weeks talking about how he couldn’t even recognize his own cabinet members,” someone argued.
