My parents never fail to tell me that one of their worst nightmares is to see me harmed in any way. I can only imagine what parents of sick children go through, and how much pain they must experience by witnessing them suffer.
Annette and Troy Turner are all too familiar with that feeling, after their daughter Chrissy received a devastating diagnosis.
Eight-year-old Chrissy hid a terrible secret from her family for months. She went to bed every night with a lump in her chest that just wouldn't go away. This wasn't any ordinary sinking feeling — it was an actual lump that she felt and was too afraid to tell her parents about because she didn't know what it was.
She finally decided to tell her mother, who upon feeling the lump for herself, became alarmed by its presence and large size.
A biopsy revealed the unthinkable: Chrissy was diagnosed with breast cancer, and the treatment would have to be a double mastectomy. Her parents were devastated — they knew that women were at risk for developing the disease, but it was unfathomable in an 8-year-old.
Chrissy's procedure was successful, and luckily there were no signs of cancer in her lymph nodes. Now, the family says that their faith has been renewed after such a harrowing ordeal.
