When thinking of Freddie Mercury, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “The Show Must Go On,” “We Are The Champions,” and “We Will Rock You” are probably some of the first songs that pop into your mind. Yet, the lead vocalist of Queen created incredible works of art aside from these notable rock songs.
Mercury, who passed away on November 24, 1991, stepped outside of his comfort zone to make music with someone completely unexpected: Spanish operatic soprano Montserrat Caballé. The duo collaborated on a crossover album released in 1988 titled Barcelona.
The record featured duets between the two singers, including an unforgettable song titled “How Can I Go On,” as well as the album’s title track. The latter even became the theme song for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, which is also the hometown of Caballé. (Sadly, Mercury didn't get to perform the song at the Olympics since he passed away the year prior.)
"Barcelona, it was the first time that we met / Barcelona, how can I forget? / The moment that you stepped into the room you took my breath away," Mercury belts as his good friend chimes in.
