Some people think that encouraging young girls to look up to Disney princesses could be detrimental to the message that women can be independent and powerful people. Just because they wear pink, frilly dresses and fall in love with a prince doesn't necessarily make them simple-minded or weak. Just to scratch the surface of how wrong that sentiment is: there's nothing wrong with falling in love.
Plus, not all of Disney's princesses even long for a man. In fact, a great number of them prefer to be independent and strong.
In this video, Disney highlights how their princesses through the decades have always been positive influences on young girls. We follow strong young women through their everyday lives, doing really incredible things. There are athletes. There are teachers in the making, there are young girls exploring the world of science, and there are girls who are initiating change in their world.
But then we also see the princesses we know so well doing the same exact things as these young girls.
What's really great about this video to me, too, is how you can clearly see how Disney has progressed over the years to include more and more types of women to star in their movies, so that there's no young woman left out. Every girl should be able to picture herself as a strong, beautiful princess in the body that she has.
