Being away from loved ones is undoubtedly hard for members of the military. Parents and siblings are missed, and children want their parents back home. The soldiers' significant others must also bear the weight of not having them home, and the distance can strain a relationship.
But in many cases, the phrase "distance makes the heart grow fonder" rings true, and some soldiers simply can't wait to propose, doing so as soon as they reach home. There's no better occasion than a homecoming to surprise your girlfriend!
First Lieutenant Nathan McGrudder has been with his girlfriend Ellise Nichols for a year, but has been planning his proposal for almost half that time! They were separated for the past six months, and as soon as he left on deployment, he decided that he wanted to ask her to be his wife.
One month later, he started planning the proposal with Ellise's parents, who also had to keep the secret from their daughter.
You can see how surprised she is when Nathan reaches into his pocket for the ring. If she suspected the proposal before, she didn't show it when he got down on one knee!
