What to Know
As you might recall, Vice President JD Vance once called himself “a Never Trump guy,” and yet, here we are. It seems like a huge leap to outsiders, and understandably, people have wondered how JD’s wife feels, given that she was once married to a “Never Trump guy” and is now married to President Donald Trump’s VP.
Usha hasn’t said much about her views, but she was a registered Democrat until at least 2014. So, how does she feel about her husband’s involvement in the MAGA movement? It’s still unclear, but don’t expect to see her walking around in a MAGA hat. Not because she doesn’t support the movement, but because she doesn’t like wearing hats?
The moment in which she tried to explain why she doesn’t have one has gone viral.
During a recent interview with NBC News’ Kate Snow, Usha admitted that she and her husband disagree about some things, but declined to say what those things are. She also said that, regardless of her beliefs, people around her have been accepting because they know how much she cares about supporting her husband.
And, of course, being Second Lady has been a huge adjustment for her. However, when Kate asked her to explain how her politics have seemingly shifted, Usha didn’t say much. Seeking more details, Kate then asked Usha if she owns a MAGA hat.
Usha didn’t answer yes or no. Instead, she acted like she’s not a fan of hats in general. “I don’t really own any hats,” she responded. “I think I have a, uh, a Disneyland hat, I wanna say…(I’m) not a hat lady.”
But people immediately found multiple photos of her wearing hats.
Sure, some people are not really hat people. But Usha does not appear to be one of those people, based on the photos people found of her. And it’s not even like she just happened to wear a hat one time and usually doesn’t. A quick scroll through her Instagram post makes it clear that she’s worn several different hats during appearances in the past year. Just no MAGA ones, of course.
People have been calling her out for this, though. Now that the clip from the recent interview has gone viral online, people have been leaving comments on her old photos to remind her that she does, in fact, wear hats. Quoting Usha herself, one person commented on an Instagram post from April 2025, writing, “I don’t really own *any* hats.” Another person wrote, “Oh, there’s a hat!”
People also compiled photos of her wearing hats, just in case it wasn’t clear that she was lying about the whole “not a hat lady” thing. At the very least, she definitely appears to have more than one hat.
Reactions to the obvious lie were mixed.

There are some people who seem to feel sorry for Usha. They think JD might leave her at some point, and some of the comments he’s made about her have rubbed them the wrong way. (When talking about Usha, Jen Psaki once said, “Like, are you OK? Please blink four times. Come over here — we’ll save you.”)
Some people seem to be holding onto hope that Usha doesn’t truly align with her husband’s politics. Reacting to Usha’s claim about not having any hats, one person on X wrote, “this woman is a democrat.” And someone else said, “She HATES MAGA and her husband [so much], omg.”

But plenty of others do not see Usha as a victim. Given that she continues to stand by her husband, they see her as “complicit”— regardless of whether she’s willing to wear a MAGA hat. And now, she’s in a difficult position.
“Imagine waking up every morning knowing you sold your values and integrity for your husband’s political ambitions…” one X user wrote. “You lie to the point you pretend you don’t have hats and now people on twitter are showing 500 photos of you wearing hats…”
