Rookie Cop Donates His Shift Earnings To Five Employees After A Tragedy

When police officer Joshua DeOliveira gave employees at the Massachusetts restaurant where he was stationed $500 in cash, it was more than just a very generous tip. These restaurant workers had just witnessed a terrible tragedy at their workplace, and this gesture was meant to help in the healing process.

Days before Officer DeOliveira’s cash gift, there was a brutal stabbing spree at the restaurant. Restaurant employees were shocked, and left with the disturbing memory. Because of the recent violence, Officer DeOliveira was stationed outside the restaurant on security detail. He decided to give away his paycheck for the detail to those who had to live with the memory of the devastating incident.

“I don’t feel right being here paid for a tragic event,” he told CBS Boston. “I’m only here because there was a tragic event.”

He gave five employees each an envelope with $100 in cash, which was actually more than he was paid to work. Employees were so moved by the generous gesture, they broke into tears and were so grateful to Officer DeOliveira. (It was a selfless deed reminiscent to the time a customer gave a bartender in need a $300 tip!)

Even though this story was born out of violence, it is proof that there are Good Samaritans out there to counter the evil.
