This dazzling bird phenomenon has researchers stumped — and two women on the River Shannon have captured it beautifully. I've seen a lot of amazing sights in nature, but I think this one takes the cake!
Called "murmurations," these clouds of black dancing across the sky are actually flocks of birds — starlings, to be exact. They move in giant clusters, swirling to great size, then shrinking down again with a lightning-fast flourish. They move in almost perfect sync, as though they share just one mind!
How do they move so gracefully together? Scientists say one starling leads the bunch in a sudden move, and its seven nearest neighbors follow. This sends a ripple effect through the flock, creating the illusion that they move in tandem.
Watching them swirl through the sky is like a watching a moving symphony!
