Joe Daley's was raised by his single mom Molly, a feisty and funny woman who worked two jobs to support him and his sister. She was always Joe's inspiration.
Molly, 66, was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia in 2015. The crippling condition interferes with a person's ability to function normally, solve problems and perform routine activities.
Since her dementia is gradually worsening, Molly lives near her family in an Ohio nursing home where Joe and his sister pay her regular visits. When Molly was first diagnosed, Joe had a difficult time finding good information about Lewy Body and had no idea what to expect as her mind and body deteriorated. In January 2017, the 46-year-old married father-of-three created a weekly series on YouTube to document their journey through dementia.
The series, which captures everyday life for the ailing mother and her heartbroken son, went viral. "When I started this video series I made a commitment to my Mother, caregivers and other people suffering from Dementia that we would make a difference and show the world the suffering that's involved with this disease," Joe writes on YouTube. "I plan on taking this video series all the way to the end."
Sometimes, Joe will arrive to the nursing home to find Molly in a state of confusion or sadness. Other days they spend together are easier and more lighthearted. But the particular visit, which you'll below, changed everything. It started out just fine until Joe began asking his mom some pointed questions while eating lunch at Tim Horton's. "One question led to another until I heard the words that no child ever wants to hear," he said.
"This day I will never forget."
