Rosie O’Donnell Explains Why She’s Still Criticizing Trump In Spite Of His Relentless Bullying

In spite of President Donald Trump’s relentless bullying, Rosie O’Donnell doesn’t think it’s time to stop speaking out against him. The fact that she has no plans to tone it down might come across as surprising to some people, given that Trump regularly mocks her and lashes out at her and has even threatened to revoke her citizenship.

However, during a recent appearance on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast, O’Donnell explained why she’s not backing down.

She feels “morally obligated” to stick up for what’s right.

On the podcast, Poehler observed that O’Donnell doesn’t “shy away” from conflict, but she also appears “shocked.” The two women also commented on how they’re often surprised by people’s silence.

O’Donnell explained, “I go, ‘Is everyone looking at the same speech he just gave? Did we hear what he just said? He is asleep again, ladies and gentlemen. Like, what is it gonna take?”

And, of course, there are other people bothered by Trump’s behavior, but O’Donnell is far from the only person who thinks people aren’t bothered enough.

So, she will not stop talking about it.

Poehler commented on how “excruciating” it feels when someone is behaving badly and no one is really saying anything about it, whether it’s in politics or other contexts. That’s when O’Donnell admitted people have actually asked her why she continues to speak out against Trump.

O’Donnell’s ongoing feud with Trump started long before he entered politics, but the fact that he’s president now has obviously made things more complicated. Still, O’Donnell remains one of his most vocal critics.

“With the political stuff, people say, ‘Why do you do it?'” O’Donnell revealed. “I do it because I feel like I owe something to this country because of my life and career.”

She continued, “That I started out on Long Island with a dead mother and a father who was compromised in many ways, and that I, you know, overweight, gay, became whatever this thing is that I became, and live this life of gross excess because of it.”

To her, speaking up feels urgent and essential at the moment.

So, it’s definitely not the time to stop talking. She said she doesn’t “feel like shutting up now when we’re on the precipice of disaster is the way to say ‘thank you’ to a country and a nation that provided me with an unbelievable life.”

Because of her privilege, she feels “morally obligated” to keep speaking up about what’s happening.

In a way, Trump’s relentless bullying has also had a positive impact on her career. Elsewhere in the episode, O’Donnell told Poehler that she feels famous again, possibly because of Trump.

“I feel like I’m recently refamous,” she said. “That’s what I feel. I told my kids, ‘Well kids, hold on, because mommy’s refamous. I don’t know how it happened. I think it’s Mango Mussolini.”

She added that if “Mango Mussolini” took a minute to think about how she has benefited from all the publicity, perhaps he would stop talking about her. “If he knew how much he was helping my career and my life, he would shut up about me because, you know, he’s a horrible creature,” she said.
