When Sophie was 16 years old, she became pregnant. The teenager wasn't sure if she was ready to be a parent, but she wasn't sure if she could arrange for her child to be adopted, either. It's a difficult position for any parent to be in. It's hard to know which outcome will be best for the child. There is no easy way to say goodbye to your little one and there is no easy way to provide for them with little resources.
"Parenting, it has its own challenges, and adoptions has its own challenges," Sophie says. Adoption today is much different than it used to be. For decades, adoptions were kept secret. Children would never find out who their birth parents were. Birth parents would never find out where their children would end up. That mystery would eat away at both parties, who were always left to wonder, what really happened?
Today, nearly 95 percent of adoptions are open on some level. But even Sophie, if she was going to go through with it, needed more than merely the names of her son's new parents. Sophie wanted to have a real relationship with her son and the family he would be raised by. Somehow, after reviewing tons of families, she was able to find it in married couple, Katie and Ben. She chose the wonderful couple, and two years later, she still stands by her decision. Sophie is allowed to visit her son and when she does, she knows that he is good hands. The unique arrangement was built on trust, respect, communication, and a whole lot of love for one little boy.
