138-Year-Old Fruitcake Is Passed Down By A Family Through Four Generations

You just can’t make this stuff up sometimes, can you? Like something out of a science fiction movie, Morgan Ford gingerly reaches for a clear glass container in his china closet. It carries the family heirloom inside, an object that has survived a surprising four generations and a whole lot of wear and tear. You might be thinking that this is a piece of jewelry, or perhaps a frayed photograph, but no — it’s a fruitcake.

An actual fruitcake.

Morgan’s great-grandmother first baked this confectionery treat 138 years ago. Why no one initially ate it seems to remain a mystery, but everyone certainly has no intention of digging in now. At least, I hope not.

If you’re thinking about trying this at home, might I entice you with a healthier cake recipe that uses Greek yogurt? What about the frozen fruitcake recipe that was all the rage in the '50s? No word yet on whether that dessert can stand the test of time.

When news broke about Ford’s unusual family heirloom, though, even Jay Leno had to see it for himself! He flew Ford and his wife out to the studio and tried a little piece. (He’s braver than I ever gave him credit for.) After, Leno reportedly commented that “it needs more agey.”
