Meet plus-size model and dancer Dexter Mayfield. In this video, Mayfield opens up about people's perception of him, and the shocking response people give him when he totally defies that perception.
He’s been a model and dancer for about eight years, and although he says that it’s been a hard road, it’s also been filled with eye-opening experiences. One in particular was being able to walk for Marco Marco’s fashion line during L.A. Fashion Week.
Although he was never professionally trained in dance, that didn’t stop Dexter from eventually landing parts in music videos for famed performers like Jennifer Lopez and Sara Bareilles.
Mayfield goes on to say that being a big, gay, black man in America isn’t easy, and that it took him a while to find love for his true self.
I think it’s people like Dexter Mayfield who have the power to break society’s perception of what should and shouldn’t be acceptable. Dexter and Ashley Graham alike, who was the first-ever plus-size model to be on Sports Illustrated’s annual swimsuit issue, are definitely paving the way for more plus-size models to rise within the industry.
Mayfield just wants to be seen as someone who is talented and deserving enough for the job, and to break down the barrier of judgment within a first impression.
