One of the things I definitely don't miss about school is those funny desks with the built-in side tables.
While they were very space-efficient and allowed you to always have a place to lean, there was something strange about having your desk wrap around your chair, kind of confining you in the classroom.
So when I first saw Teri's little desk that she would be transforming into a cute piece for her porch, I was skeptical that something so awkward and angular could be turned into something cute.
But I was pleasantly surprised when she used her amazing mosaic skills on the chair to turn it into something beautiful.
With broken glass and a little bit of grout, mosaic art can add a beautiful effect to tables, patio furniture, gardens, and even entire floors.

Clever crafter Teri has big plans for this old wooden desk that go far past a new paint job.
Using glass shards, grout, and plenty of beautiful old plates, she will create a seat that almost looks too beautiful to sit on.
She starts out with her glass pieces that will be glued together to form the mosaic design.
She uses pieces that she broke with a hammer as well as glasses that she carefully cut herself to create the shapes she hasop in mind.
Mosaics can be made up of broken glass, ceramics, or porcelain, which is a great way to preserve any dishes you can't bear to part with.
Once the shards are broken, cut, or collected, they are then arranged to form a shape or a scene.
Once the shape is established, the tiles are then glued down and grouted to seal everything in.
The grouting in between gives the mosaic an amazing in-motion effect; it looks like the shards are spontaneously breaking into a beautiful shape!
Teri opts to use beautiful porcelain plates to be the material for her mosaic.
After carefully cutting the glass pieces so they maintain their circular shape, she then arranges the broken china onto the seat and side table.
The overall effect looks like the plates are broken yet intact on the chair.
They are also surrounded by other pretty plate designs that are broken in a more haphazard way.
Once the pieces are glued in place with E6000 glue, they are grouted in place and a black enamel is added to the rest of the desk.
The final mosaic looks museum-worthy. Combining the old chair with an interesting artistic medium makes it look much more extravagant than it did before!
