"It's in my blood!" cried out Houston firefighter Michael "Smitty" Smith. It turns out that while this legendary fireman might be retired, it doesn't seem that he truly understands (nor cares) what that word is supposed to mean.
That's because when he heard on the news that the men from his former fire department were having a bit of trouble fighting a three-alarm fire, this energetic man knew exactly what he had to do: suit up and help in the only way he knew how!
After 42 years of dedicated service to fighting fires and protecting his community, Smitty finally stepped down to enjoy a well-deserved peaceful retirement. With such a dangerous and intense job, it seems that the last thing anyone would want to do is go back to work.
But Smitty doesn't seem like the kind of man who enjoys the "peace and quiet," because the second he heard that his friends were battling a dangerous blaze, he got into his pickup and drove straight to the scene.
"It's like the old firehorses when they hear the bell ring, they still go!" he said when asked why he decided to show up. It's not even really that Smitty made a decision to go help, it's in his nature, it's what he had to do because firefighters really are some of the most incredible people out there!
Smitty shows us all that age really is just a number. After 42 years of fighting countless fires, this man has done his best to help his friends, and that's what life is really all about!
