Bright Orange Flamingos Pop Up All Over Town As Community Supports Local Teen With Cancer

When Marlene Van Dyke and her husband moved to the small town of Weare, NH, they came from out of state knowing there were no friends or family members for miles.

That changed over the years as their family grew not just in their own home, but in the community around them. The close-knit bond that formed became even more important to the Van Dykes as they were dealt a difficult blow recently.

Their 12-year-old daughter, Abby, was diagnosed with leukemia just a few weeks ago. With her prior experience in health care, Marlene knew that her little girl was in for a tough road ahead. The mom of two also began to stress how she would be able to take care of Abby, get her to her appointments, and also watch after her younger brother with her husband's job as a pilot frequently keeping him away from home.

She had no idea that her community was already rallying behind them with a vibrant show of support.

On a recent trip to the orthodontist, Abby requested orange bands for her braces as the color represents leukemia awareness and survival.

She was likely also inspired by her bright surroundings that popped up while she was initially in the hospital receiving treatment.

Friends in the community began selling orange plastic flamingos and displaying them in their yards, covering as much space as possible for her to see how much they love her while on the ride home.

Each flamingo costs $10 a piece with proceeds going to the family for Abby's medical bills.

The response has been so overwhelming, not just in her own town but across the state and even around the country with the hashtag #AbbyStrong making its way around various social media.

Local businesses, like the gym Marlene is a member of shown above, have also joined in the uplifting project.

A few towns away, the Pembroke Fire Department proudly showed off a flamingo riding shotgun in one of their trucks.

Back in her hometown, the animal control department posted their support while on patrol with the silly heads poking through their window.

Abby was so touched by their incredible act of kindness, saying that she hopes everyone with cancer is able to feel the same level of support surrounding them, too.
