When Derrick knew that he wanted to propose to his long term girlfriend, Jackie, there was one extra factor he had to take into consideration.
Jackie's daughter, Gianna.
Derrick knew that he wanted to take care of Gianna and Jackie for the rest of his life. However, when a new man comes into a little girl's life, it can be confusing for her. While Derrick and Gianna have a loving relationship, and Derrick feels as though he is Gianna's father, he still wants to make sure that she knows that before asking her mother to be his wife.
Derrick tricks Jackie and Gianna into thinking that they're off on a lifestyle shoot for Jackie's birthday, but this is the day he's chosen to pop the question to both of the lovely ladies in his life.
While they're out on the gondola, the ladies have no idea that all of their closest family members and friends were waiting on the bridge with a giant banner meant for Jackie.
Once they float underneath the bridge, it seems like Gianna is the first one to recognize what's actually going on. She starts to giggle immediately. That's when her mom sees it, too.
The most touching part of this to me is the fact that he addresses Gianna first, before turning the attention to his soon-to-be fiancé. This really does let her know that she is an important part of this family, and that she'll never be overlooked even though he isn't her biological dad.
