At a performance last December, Hozier was given the surprise of a lifetime when a group in his audience burst into song just shortly after he'd finished his set.
Hozier's live performance in the following video of his breakout single "Take Me To Church," a song that's topped charts since it hit the radio last year, is a worthwhile watch on its own. But during his performance, a choir in his audience sang backup harmonies during his chorus. Upon finishing his set, Hozier thanked them and they began singing, again, his seminal hit in harmony. "Never heard a song sang back to me like that," he says backstage with a wide smile. "Thank you very, very much."
We've seen countless renditions of the hit since it went mainstream. The Ukrainian ballet’s Sergei Polunin danced to the pop ballad in a video directed by photographer and imaginative contemporary artist David LaChapelle, giving an arresting performance in a sun-flooded building that breathed new life into the song's powerful message. And just recently, Sharon Irving performed a cover of the song on America's Got Talent that was so powerful, she elicited a historic response from the show's regular judge Mel B. Each one is just as great as the last, but this video is a standout.
