9-Year-Old Is Kicked Out Of School For Shaving Her Head In Solidarity With Best Friend

Kamryn Renfro is 9 years old but her wisdom goes well beyond her age.

The little girl from Grand Junction, CO did something brave. She shaved her hair off to support her friend diagnosed with cancer.

“It felt like the right thing to do,” said Kamryn.

Delany Campbell, who is only 11 years old, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma and had to undergo chemotherapy. She lost all of her hair like so many others affected by cancer.

"It made me feel very special and that I'm not alone," Delany said.

You'd think the adults in her life would praise Kamryn and Delaney for their unbreakable bond, courage, and solidarity.

However, that wasn't the case. When Kamryn returned to school, Caprock Academy, she was turned away. Staff told her, "Don't come back until you have hair."

Schools have some absurd policies; Mireya Briceno was kicked out of prom for wearing a perfectly ordinary dress.

“Caprock Academy does have a detailed dress code policy, which was created to promote safety, uniformity, and a non-distracting environment for the school’s students. Under this policy, shaved heads are not permitted,” said Catherine Norton Breman, President and Chair of Caprock Academy Board of Directors.

Delany’s mother, Wendy Campbell, was dismayed by the school's reaction. “I didn’t realize that hair was such an important aspect of a child at school,” Wendy said.

While a school uniform may be helpful to students, it seems a bit odd that school would police students' hair choices.

"For a little girl to be really brave and want to shave her head in support of her friend. I thought that was a huge statement and it builds character in a child," Wendy added.
