Stranger Raises $40,000 For Innocent Man Convicted Of Murder

Back in 1989, a man named Darryl Rush was shot and killed in New York. At the time of the murder, Jonathan Fleming was on a family trip to Disney World. Despite being thousands of miles away, Jonathan was wrongfully convicted of the crime and sentenced to 35 years to life in prison.

Three weeks ago — after spending 24 years in jail for a crime he didn't commit — a newly discovered piece of evidence cracked the case wide open. One simple phone receipt proved Jonathan was in Florida mere hours before the killing. He was finally exonerated and set free. He was released with 93 dollars to his name, no where to go, and no one to turn to.

Inspired by Jonathan's positive attitude despite his nightmarish situation, a 32-year-old Wall Street banker named Alex started an online fundraiser to help Jonathan land back on his feet. Alex and Jonathan didn't know each other and had never met before, but Alex felt it his duty to help this innocent man. The money raised will help Jonathan pay rent and buy food while he looks for a job. So far, Alex's campaign has raised more than $40,000! More than 600 strangers in 14 countries have donated their money.

"I was terrified, and I had no idea how i would be able to survive," Jonathan wrote in a thank you statement. "And then, in a moment, I became one of the luckiest people alive."
