The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Wednesday that IKEA, the Swedish-founded ready-to-assemble furniture store, is recalling about 27 million chest and dressers because they can tip over and crush children if they aren't anchored to walls. The recall follows the reported deaths of two children.
The retailer wants anyone using the furnishings, which include children's chests and dressers taller than 23 1/2 inches and adult chests and dressers taller than 29 1/2 inches, to stop immediately — unless the furniture is securely anchored into the wall. (If it is not anchored, consumers should move unanchored chests and dressers into storage or areas where they cannot be accessed by children.)
Consumers aren't supposed to return the furniture. Instead, they can pick up a new free wall anchoring repair kit for the affected MALM chests and other IKEA chests and dressers. The MALM chests that are part of the repair program were sold starting in 2002. The price of the chests range from about $80–$200.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, "A child dies every two weeks and a child is injured every 24 minutes in the U.S. from furniture or TVs tipping over." To help prevent injuries and deaths, CPSC and IKEA urge consumers to securely anchor furniture and TVs to prevent these tragedies and make their home a safer place.
