Wrongfully Convicted Man Is Set Free After 28 Years

In 1987, Steven Chaney was sent to prison for the murder of a Dallas, TX couple, John and Sally Sweek.

Twenty-eight years later, a judge set him free under the belief he wasn’t given a fair trial, similarly to the innocent Louisiana man who spent years in jail for a crime he didn't commit.

“I'm overwhelmed by the things that are happening to me,” Chaney told Fox 4. "Twenty-eight years ago I was put in prison for something I didn't do and today the process of making that right has begun."

The only evidence against Chaney was a bite mark on one of the victims. The state and Judge Dominique Collins believe that the two dental experts who testified didn’t offer sufficient research to back up their claims. They also used invalid terms, including "there was a one-in-a-million chance the biter was not Chaney." If the trial happened today, that wouldn't be allowed.

The video below shows the happy moment Chaney left the court with his wife by his side. Others who were once wrongfully imprisoned also showed up that day to support Chaney.

“I can sit and recount all the losses. The loss of my older stepson, my oldest grandchild two years ago,” he said. “But this is a time for rejoicing and this is not a time to recount wrongs that have been done.”
