Comedian Tommy Davidson Reflects On His Childhood And The Meaning Of Family

Childhood is a challenging time for just about everyone. You’re learning, you’re growing, and you're trying to figure out who you are as a person.

If it’s tough for the average child, I can’t imagine how much harder growing up must have been for Tommy Davidson. The comedian, who got his big break on In Living Color, spent his early years with unanswered questions hanging over his head.

In a lot of ways, Davidson has had a blessed life. He has a great career, loving parents, and, now, a beautiful family of his own. But things got off to a difficult start — Davidson joined his current family after his birth mother left him in the garbage at the side of the road.

Much like this little girl left by her mother in a Burger King, Davidson was abandoned when he was too young to know what was happening. At just 18 months, it’s likely that he would have died from exposure, if his guardian angel hadn’t arrived at just the right moment.

The woman who would become his adoptive mother saw his foot, peeking out from behind a pile of trash, and swept in to save him. The scenario reminds me of this teenage boy who rescued a tiny baby in the woods, but in Davidson's case, the abandoned toddler immediately had a place to call home.

Now, close to fifty years later, he reflects back on his adoption, his childhood, and how he felt when he finally met his birth mother for the first time. Check out the video below to hear more about Tommy Davidson’s remarkable life.
