When Joni Mitchell first came up with the idea for her 1971 gorgeous song, "California" she was incredibly homesick thousands and thousands of miles away in France. The song itself is a sort of travelogue that takes us from France to Spain, and other places in the old world. And while she meets beautiful and interesting people along the way, she's still drawn to the friendly and artistic atmosphere of California.
Back in the turbulent era of the 1960s and 70s, so much of the world was changing. And even though America was going through so much heartache in Vietnam, she still yearned for the amazing culture and beautiful vistas of the Californian countryside.
As you listen to Mitchell sing this heartbreaking song, appreciate the honesty in her deliveries. Her "stream of consciousness" lyrics, while a bit "out there," are all glued together with her beautifully sad voice.
Mitchell recently suffered from a brain aneurism back in early 2015, and while she's certainly doing better we would still like to send all of our thoughts and prayers her way so she can get back up again so we can even possibly hear her beautiful voice again soon!
Please SHARE this beautiful song if you think Joni's voice is gorgeous even though she doesn't use fancy computer equipment!
