DIYs can be fun, resourceful, practical — but I think the best ones are when they truly means something.
When a DIY project really comes from the heart — like the swing this dad built for his disabled daughter — it becomes something even more special and unique.
The father of this DIY-er had a pet project for many years: a rickety old table held together with scraps of wood and rusty nails.
His mother always tried to throw the old thing out, but the table managed to live on — even after his father passed away.
When his dad left him the table, this DIY-er decided to refurbish it — but not by decking it out with the best tools and materials money can buy…
Instead, he restored it the way his father would have wanted: in memory of his father, he spent as little money as possible to fix up his dad's table.

When this DIY-er lost his father, he decided to do something special to honor his memory: refurbish the beat-up old table his dad had long protected and repaired.
"I like that he liked this table, and had it for so long, and put work into keeping it going," he explained as to why he decided to refurbish the table. "I like the signs of age that it shows, the signs of use, all the burn marks and stains."
"My dad's typical handiwork of random pieces of repurposed scraps," he explained of the blocks of wood on the underside of the table.
"Around this point as the planks fell apart in my hands, and the frame disintegrating, I did almost reconsider the whole endeavor," he said — but even so, he continued on.
"If there were any options without spending money involved, those are the options I'd take," he said. To fix the cracks in the table, he used wood glue and the cheapest clamps he could find to pull the table back together.
"In spirit of my dad I wanted to fashion the new base from whatever was on hand," he said. "We had this beautiful pine board that I cut to fit most of the table."
He sanded the top of the original table to diminish any pocks or rough patches.
For the stain, he used whatever color was lying around the house — in this case, a deep brown.
He reassembled the table using whatever screws were taken out of the table. "I was determined to not spend any money on this if I could help it, in true spirit of my dad."
And in the end, he only spent $32 to fully refurbish his late father's table. What a beautiful and heartfelt way to remember a lost one through a DIY.
We think it's beautiful that he honored his father's memory with this special refurbishing project. The end result might not be "high-end," but it certainly comes from the heart.
