Use These Cooking Methods To Reduce Carcinogens In Processed Meats

The verdict is in: red meat and processed meat have been linked to cancer by the World Health Organization. That includes hot dogs, bacon, sausages, deli meats, hams, and beef, to name a few.

According to CNN, "The report revealed that as little as two slices of bacon can increase the risk of colorectal (bowel) cancer by 18 percent." WHO now classifies processed meat in the same categories as asbestos and smoking.

The organization has reported 32,000 deaths due to cancer attributed to diets high in processed meats.

"These results are important in enabling governments and international regulatory agencies to conduct risk assessments, in order to balance the risks and benefits of eating red meat and processed meat and to provide the best possible dietary recommendations," said Christopher Wild, head of the WHO's cancer agency.

However, that doesn't mean everyone must turn to veganism and vegetarianism. There are a few methods of preparing these foods that can reduce the risk of cancer. (Even drinking a glass of red wine can help!)

Dietician Amy Shapiro says that we should steer clear of the grill. Burning and charring foods releases the carcinogens in them.

“We want to keep red meats and these processed meats away from an open flame,” she said. Her recommendation is to steam sausages and boil foods like hot dogs and bacon.
