Community Comes Together To Save A Beloved Basketball Gym

Carlos Adams can’t even imagine what life would be like without teaching basketball to his beloved students at the old Buffington Elementary gymnasium in Canton, GA.

The former professional basketball star told Fox 5 that his biggest fear is "losing it and not really having a place to go."

“Giving it back up to somebody or some people that didn't want to have anything to do with it,” he added.

But, he’s come close to losing the gym twice.

In 2010, county leaders wanted to close the gym because of the hefty amount of money needed to repair it. That didn’t happen, thanks to the loving community members who put up their own money and six months of their time to fix the gym as you'll see in the video below. (The power of this community is just as incredible as the neighbors who supported a military family in an unbelievable way during a difficult time!)

Five years later, Adams also had another scare when someone wanted to buy the gym. But, he worked quickly and arduously to prevent the sale, even though he found out about the ordeal later than he should have.

"I instill in them don't quit. Don't give up," Adams said. "And I found myself in that same situation. Should I give up and walk away from it? No!"
