Surrogate Mother Refuses To Abort Child With Heart Defects

It's an unthinkable situation for all involved. A couple hired single mother Crystal Kelley as their surrogate. When she became pregnant with a little girl, it seemed like good news.

Surrogates, like Amy who carried her best friend's child, can be a blessing, but when the surrogate's priorities change, it can cause some problems. Halfway through Crystal's pregnancy, ultrasounds revealed that the baby would be born with a number of heart defects and neurological issues.

"They said she had a less than 25 percent chance of being able to have a normal life," Crystal told ABC. The couple demanded that Crystal get an abortion.

"I refused. I couldn't do it. I was the one who was feeling her kick and squirm. I knew she had a fighting spirit and I wanted to fight for her," says Crystal. But the couple was adamant.

When they wouldn't compromise, Crystal fled to Michigan, where the law would give her parental rights as the child's birth mother.

"They said that they didn't want to bring a baby into the world only for that child to suffer. They said I should try to be 'Godlike,' and have mercy on the child," she said.

Crystal didn't want the baby to get lost in the system. The little girl was born with the heart defects as predicted and a cleft palate, but Crystal was able to find her two loving adoptive parents.

The child will undergo several surgeries, but at least she will know the bond of two parents who chose to love her.
