A 6-week-old kitten is on the road to recovery after being rescued from a fire in Pennsylvania last month.
Missing an ear and chunks of fur, the kitten was meowing for help in a garage when members of the Stroud Township Volunteer Fire Department found him. The garage caught fire after an arsonist by the name of Daniel Hernandez doused his neighbor’s car with lighter fluid and set it on fire on the morning of October 15.
"We were actually pulling debris and garbage out of the fire and heard meowing underneath a shelf,” Stroud Township Volunteer Firefighter Matthew Smalley told WNEP News Station.
The kitten, who has since been named “Logi,” was rushed to the emergency vet immediately. He is fighting an infection, is missing part of his face, will lose some toes, and may not grow back some of his fur, but he is playful and happy.
Volunteer firefighters Matthew and David Smalley and their sister Bethany Smalley, who are proud owners of a number of rescue animals, have grown attached to the kitten and have decided to keep him.
"He's such a sweetheart and my dog adores him," Bethany told LittleThings. "He's starting to understand that he's a part of our family now, we're definitely keeping him."
His new owners have started a GoFundMe called “Love for Logi” to raise money for his vet expenses. They’ve since surpassed their goal of $800, raising more than $1,700. Bethany says that local media coverage has played a big role in getting support and donations for Logi's vet expenses.
“Our miniature panther is growing every day and showing off his battle scars more and more,” Bethany shared in an update Saturday. “His injuries are definitely not slowing him down, though, he runs through the house chasing balls and string (and toes — ouch!) and playing like a typical kitten should.”
“He's got a long recovery ahead of him but because of all you wonderful people, it will be that much easier to get him the help he needs,” she added.
The Stroud Township Police Department could not be reached for comment on the arson case — it was last reported that Hernandez was locked up in Monroe County jail on arson and other charges, with his bail set to $250,000.
