Back in 1967, Sally Field was starring in the lead role of The Flying Nun, the beloved television show on ABC.
While Field initially hated the idea of starring in such a silly-sounding show, her stepfather eventually talked her into accepting the role, informing her that everyone has to start somewhere, and that she might never be offered any other roles in the future if she turned this one down so early.
The premise of the show was that Field's character, Sister Bertrille, weighed so little, and that her headdress was so large, that in the right windy conditions, she could actually fly up into the air.
Using this "talent," the character could help solve mysteries, run surveillance from the sky, or even strike the fear of God into bad guys, causing them to repent for their sins.
While the show was mocked by critics, it received a huge audience and was incredibly popular with television viewers from all over. While Field was initially embarrassed by this role, it was certainly a necessity to keep her in the houses of America.
This "silly" role landed her other television shows, and before she knew it, she was starring in dramas and winning all kinds of awards. It really goes to show that you should never turn down a good opportunity! This friendly nun turned out to be just what she needed to help make her a screen legend!
Do you remember this classic show? It only lasted three short seasons, but just seeing her flying though the air should send nostalgia waves all over!
