Many grandparents bequeath things to their grandchildren. They leave behind jewelry, clothing, and other seemingly random household items. The ones who plan well may gift money and homes to future generations. The value of some of these gifts is clear. Other items have sentimental value.
Sometimes though, the value becomes apparent over time. That was the case for Tommy, whose grandmother left him her collection of banknotes after her death. One $5 bill has such unique features his girlfriend shared information about the currency on TikTok.

Charlotte Carroll, who goes by Lottie Starlight on TikTok, posted the bill, calling it “the most insane banknote I have ever seen.”
It’s a printing error that makes the 1988 bill so unusual, the New York Post notes. A portion of the back corner of the bill is transposed on top of the front and the back has a large blank space. Carroll’s video of the money went viral, attracting over 900,000 views so far.

“I decided to share on TikTok because I have a lot of community in the money-collecting world that I wanted to share with,” Carroll told Newsweek. “But I never thought the video would blow up the way it did.”
People find the bill fascinating and some have offered a lot of money for it. “We have had people offer between $5 and $400,000 for it,” Carroll said. “And all we refuse.”
While people have expressed intense interest, Wyatt McDonald, a paper money expert from Coinfully.com, said that while this misprints are interesting, they’re more common than people think. “These notes are made in such high a volume that they do not generally command meaningful premiums in the collector market.”
This type of misprint on an uncirculated bill will only garner a premium 2 to 3 times the bill’s face value.
But the people on social media seem to be operating by a different set of rules.
One user commented: “That is worth SOO much!! my jaw DROPPED.”
Another guessed that the couple could collect $4,000 for the bill.
No matter the offer, Carroll said she and Tommy are resolute in their decision not to sell. “It is our most favorite, and priceless, piece out of anything in our collection,” she said.
