This Brilliant Smartphone App Helps People Over 50 Look For Companionship

In the past few years, many online dating websites have been invented for people of all ages and backgrounds, all with the goal of setting up newfound soulmates.

And though some people choose other ways to meet each other — like these two 80-year-olds who went on an exciting blind date — there's something about using technology to meet people that's simply extraordinary.

New on the market is Stitch, an amazing smartphone app that allows those over 50 to seek real, meaningful companionships, platonic or otherwise.

This new app much like Tinder — a popular dating app among millennials — where one can essentially say "yes" or "no" upon seeing the photo of a potential match.

The biggest difference is that it gives seniors a greater opportunity to meet people who share the same interests — like salsa dancing, wine tasting, and painting, for example — and to pursue further relationships with them.

Stitch first launched a little over a year ago, with the goal of allowing seniors to not only find romantic partners, but also to let them form platonic friendships.

Currently, more than 25,000 Stitch users are on the app looking for people to travel with, to attend social events with, and even to find new hobbies with.

“Grandparents are kind of seen as annoying, or as a burden or they’re far away and you never get to see them… This is not the way you’re supposed to treat people that are going through a process that is inevitable,” Marcie, the founder, said to CNBC.

To use the app, members first have to go through a verification process, and scan their driver’s license to the company.

Once their accounts are set up, they can chat with others through the app, or even talk on the phone, before deciding to meet up in person.

Stitch members can also use the app to search for local activities and events.

They can then seek others to invite — either as dates, or just as friends.

The main point of the app is to seemingly ease the “process” of aging, but more so, to help seniors feel less lonely, and more connected to others around them.

Even married couples are invited to use the app, as its goal is bigger than just dating.

"We invite married and taken adults who are looking for non-romantic activity partners," the website explains. "If you are married and are looking for an activity companion, you can find one on Stitch. We have many Stitch members who have spouses who can no longer go out to dinner or go skiing, and they would like to find a non-romantic companion to do that with."

However, they clarify that this app is not intended for cheating spouses. "We have a zero-tolerance policy for adultery."

“It’s just like a beautiful thing… to see that what we’re doing is actually working,” said Marcie of the increasingly popular app.
