New Hampshire Police Officer Michael Kotsonis responded to a shoplifting complaint after employees caught a woman stealing grocery items on the security camera.
The woman was arrested and eventually released. But then, Officer Kotsonis learned what exactly she had stolen.
Her basket contained shortening, cake mix and frosting. The woman admitted they were the ingredients she needed for her daughter's birthday cake.
Here was a helpless mother without the means to bake her child’s birthday cake.
The officer knew what the woman did was wrong, but he wasn't about to let her daughter go without a birthday cake. So, he went right back into the store, paid for the woman's cake ingredients, and delivered the items to her home.
Officer Kotsonis is a 20-year veteran of the Portsmouth police department. Though he was never looking for praise, this story went viral and people all over the country were touched by his compassion.
For every "bad cop" story we hear in the news, it helps to know there are so many more good guys out there.
