Linda and Doreen are identical twin sisters, but they were raised in completely different ways. Linda was raised by her biological mom; she was loved, supported, and encouraged to get an education. Doreen was kidnapped as a small child. She was raised by the woman who took her — an abusive alcoholic. Doreen became pregnant at 17 and never finished high school. It would seem that two women, in such different environments, would turn out to be drastically different people.
Yet, when the identical twin sisters reunited after 35 years, they learned that they were unbelievably similar. Linda and Doreen are both terrified of heights, they have a distaste for alcohol, and they are exactly the same height. What scientists like Dr. Nancy Segal, who is a twin herself, can learn from twins is what is passed on in our genes from our parents and what isn't. Who knew that a fear of heights could be genetic? On the flip side, Linda and Doreen have different favorite colors.
"It was almost as if I knew what she was thinking," Doreen told Dr. Segal. "When I look at her or when I speak to her, I hear myself even though we're separate people. The more we spoke, the more it was like I knew her life."
