Funny man Steve Martin has been making us laugh for decades now. Even before his hysterical film The Jerk hit theaters in 1979, he had already earned two Grammy Awards for his popular stand-up comedy albums. He also made several memorable appearances as the host for Saturday Night Live. No one can forget his groovy song-and-dance performance of "King Tut." I bet just reading the name got the song in your head right now!
But this clip from the late-night sketch show gives us a glimpse at a calmer, more altruistic side to the legendary comedian. Well, at first, anyway. Filmed for their holiday special in 1991, there are no silly costumes or pratfalls. Martin simply sits in front of a perfectly trimmed tree dressed in a cozy suit. While the tinsel sparkles behind him, he paints a beautiful image of his wish for "all the children of the world to join hands and sing together in the spirit of harmony and peace." What a sweet thought, right?
Of course, the comedian couldn't leave it at just that. Things take an hilariously strange turn as Martin's list gets a little longer and a lot more personal. That precious idea of harmony and peace is all but thrown out the window as he amends the list again and again for his extremely, uh, specific requests.
