As a band, the Monkees have carried on far beyond their short-lived self-titled TV show. Even with the tragic passing of singer Davy Jones just a few years ago, the remaining members continue to sell out shows together and solo.
But for two seasons back in the mid-1960s, Jones and bandmates Mike Nesmith, Micky Dolenz, and Peter Tork made the band and themselves household names with each zany episode. Of course, the often quirky storylines also made sure to leave room for two musical breaks so they could promote their chart-topping albums. Those breaks were called "romps," based on the madcap bouncing and running around involved during the montages. And it wasn't just teen girls who found themselves adoring the Monkees' wacky ways; John Lennon admitted to being a fan during the group's trip to England — he even compared them to the Marx Brothers!
However, for the show's Christmas special in 1967, the boys took that slapstick energy down a notch to cover a traditional Spanish tune, "Ríu Ríu Chíu." Listening to their pitch-perfect harmonies, you'd never guess they had only been performing together for about a year at this point. In fact, they didn't even know one another before being cast in their teen idol roles. Clearly, fate wanted these talented guys to combine their musical gifts for us all to enjoy. Even if you don't speak the language, you can't help but feel the holiday spirit in this delightful melody.
I make sure to give it a listen every year! SHARE with your friends to spread the great holiday vibes!
