Sam Smith is one of today's most emotionally charged performers, with a huge voice and an even bigger heart that he bears entirely in all of his songs. When he was asked to write the theme song for the new James Bond film, he put himself into Bond's shoes to write the lyrics. However, he wanted to let the man with a license to kill show his heart in an epic song. The end result, "Writing's on the Wall," certainly accomplishes everything Smith set out to do.
With all of that powerful passion, it's not an easy thing to successfully cover a Sam Smith song. Some people do admirably well, coming very close, but there's usually a little something missing. Maybe it's just not genuine, or a note or two is off… but covers can rarely hold a candle to the original.
However, when Stojanco Buchkov takes a stab at the Spectre theme, he totally knocks it out of the park! He captures all of the emotion that Sam Smith carries in his voice. While Russian is his first language, Buchkov sings the English words with such grace. I don't know about you, but I am always so impressed when anyone can speak in, let alone sing in, another language and flawlessly convey the proper sentiment. It just goes to show you that some things can be lost in translation, but emotions are universal, as is music. I can't wait to see what else he can do!
