For 40 years, the only thing Gary Bui had of his father were two photographs: one of the Vietnam veteran with his mother, another of the pair with his older brother. He never met his father, and although born in Vietnam while his father fought in the war, he would end up in an American foster home. Since he was old enough to, Gary searched for his father, pouring over the two photos in hopes that something important would reveal itself.
“This is my proof that you know, he’s out there somewhere,” Gary told KRQE's Chris McKee. The thing was, his father, Jerry P. Quinn had been looking for him too. Jerry was even reunited with Gary's birthmother in Vietnam, but Jerry still couldn't find him. Jerry met Gary's mother in the 1970s, but was forced to leave Vietnam when the war ended. When Communist forces took over the region, Jerry completely lost contact with his family.
“That was the last day I saw Gary’s mother and Gary hadn’t been born yet,” Jerry said. “Gary, my son, and his mother have been on my heart for 40 years."
One day while online Gary found another man searching for his birthparents on Facebook and decided to send him a friend request. By complete chance, the man shared a post from Jerry who was looking for his son. Gary didn't believe it was real until he saw that Jerry had the exact same photos. Finally, the two reunited and the resemblance is astonishing.
“I think this is more than a miracle. It just, you know, I mean, everything happened so fast,” Gary said.
