Early Bon Jovi Video For Their 1984 Single ‘Runaway’ Is Mesmerizing And Intense

The 1980s are fondly remembered for bringing tons of wacky fashion, film, and music trends to our pop culture. Who can forget the, um, quirky hairstyle rocked by the lead singer of A Flock of Seagulls, for instance? And that wasn't even the weirdest look you might have seen while walking down the street back then!

Another band that was a fan of hairspray, Bon Jovi, made their debut in 1984. While he's developed more of a clean-cut look in recent years, lead singer Jon Bon Jovi definitely used his fair share of Aqua Net during the decade. This video might have been a whole bottle on its own!

Originally recorded in 1982, the song "Runaway" became their first-ever hit single long before "You Give Love a Bad Name" or "Wanted Dead or Alive" were even written down. The tune shot to popularity after the band won a contest for unsigned musicians hosted by a local New York City radio station. Thanks to that helpful promotion, they were able to record their first self-titled album with this track starting the whole thing off.

Though Jon and the rest of the band tend to shy away from performing tracks from their first two albums, this song is just way too good for them to ignore, and they still play it on tour to this day. I have a feeling they might hold onto a little embarrassment when it comes to the video that goes with it, however. The intense imagery of a runaway teen is matched by Jon's intensely tight purple pants. It's about as '80s as you can get without an actual time machine!
