I started playing the flute in middle school, and while I enjoyed climbing the ranks of first and second chair for our concert performances, the real fun was getting a bit more rowdy for football games and parades. Even the times when it felt like my fingers might freeze off during winter events, it was always a blast to get dressed up in the uniform and hang out with my friends while we pumped up the crowd.
It got even more fun when I was able to join the color guard in high school. I put away my instrument and grabbed a flag instead, learning all the routines for twirling it around. Of course, you need to be careful with those things. They can be pretty heavy and if you aren't staying alert, you can end up bruised from head to toe. In fact, my own clumsiness ended up getting the best of me before I could show off my moves at more than a few performances. I was bummed, but it was for the best that I return to my flute for everyone's safety.
At just 3 years old, this talented little dude has already put me to shame! His name is Maximus, which is pretty fitting for such a stellar small fry! He attended every one of his local flag team practices, and soon he was outshining them all at the games. Even though he's on the sidelines, he still manages to steal the whole show.
