Princess Anne Defies Royal Protocol And Her Own Mother During This Week’s NATO Royal Reception

Man, Queen Elizabeth's children are really up to a lot of mischief these days! In what could be seen as a playful rebuke, Princess Anne decided to take a moment during the palace's recent NATO reception to act out.

After greeting President Trump and first lady Melania Trump, the Queen gestured toward her daughter to hop over and greet the pair. In what is being seen as a royal act of defiance, Princess Anne simply offers up a "Who, me?" shrug and eschews her mother's wishes. The Queen is standing alongside Prince Charles and Camilla, all of whom greeted the pair.

Of course, this isn't the first time a member of the royal family has acted out in preference to their own wishes, royal protocol or not. Princess Anne has been known for being a firecracker, but Buckingham Palace is full of them. Those royals, man. They're feisty!

In the video from ITV, we can see the Queen, Charles, and Camilla greeting Donald Trump and wife Melania. Then, as the Queen gestures toward Princess Anne to hurry over, Anne simply replies with a "make me" shrug. Dang!

This is hardly the first time a member of the family has adopted an "I do what I want" stance. Back in the 1980s, Princess Diana famously sent the nation into a fit when she hugged patients who were battling HIV and AIDS.

For their part, Prince William and Kate have insisted on traveling frequently with Prince George, which is a general no-no because William and George are third and fourth in line for the throne. Generally, the two would not be allowed to travel together in case of an accident.

While she doesn't do it often, even the Queen sometimes breaks her own rules! Earlier this year, she was filmed accepting a gift of flowers at an event. Laura-Ann Barr, a blogger who attended the event and took video, said, "The security staff congratulated me and said they were surprised she stopped and accepted the flowers. They said that had not happened ever before."

Meghan Markle makes waves pretty much every other week for the various ways she defies royal rules. One of them feels pretty silly: She's been photographed wearing dark nail polish on her toes. The royal women are expected to wear light nail polish or none at all.

In 2010, Prince Charles broke a pretty major rule: He signed an autograph. The royal family isn't allowed to do so because their signatures could be copied, causing all kinds of mayhem and distress. But while meeting victims of a flash flood, Charles couldn't resist a couple's request.

One of the biggest breaches of royal decorum happened in 1991 when Princess Diana gave a tell-all interview about the breakdown of her marriage to Prince Charles. She also spoke openly about struggling with bulimia.

Meghan Markle also committed another royal fashion faux pas: She wore all black! The family generally wears the color only for somber days and observances, such as Remembrance Day, but Meghan work all black at the British Fashion Awards in 2019.

Another famous break with the family occurred with King Edward VIII abdicated the throne in favor of marrying his girlfriend, American divorcée Wallis Simpson. The abdication caused a minor catastrophe at the time, though it did make way for the current Queen to ascend to the throne.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are known for a huge break in royal tradition: They really lay on the PDA. The couple is regularly photographed holding hands, hugging, and touching one another in loving gestures.
