As parents, there is such a fine line between respecting your child's privacy and protecting them from undue harm. Every one of us can remember being a kid and being a little sneaky when our parents were away. Most kids don't actually want to do anything wrong. When Skylar Fish saw a game on the internet called the "Duct Tape Challenge," like the Cinnamon Challenge, he probably thought it was a fun thing to do with friends. The problem with being a teen— you probably remember this — is that you can lack foresight.
The "Duct Tape Challenge" doesn't involve alcohol or drugs, doesn't involve lying to your parents or anyone. In it, friends wrap their arms and legs tight in duct tape and see how long it takes to escape. When Skylar was playing, he lost balance and hit his head on a concrete and metal window frame. The hit crushed his eye socket and cheekbone and caused bleeding in his brain. Doctors told his mother, Sarah, that he was lucky to be alive.
"I don’t know what I would do if I lost him. They told me over and over that… he’s lucky to be alive," Sarah told KCPQ. "They’re just looking at what’s fun, what’s cool, what's going to impress their friends. 'I can break out of this duct tape. I'm the strongest. I’m the best.' They’re not thinking what if I fall and hit my head."
Sarah hopes that teens and parents alike will take this as a warning: just cause something looks fun online, doesn't mean it's safe in real life.
