Nick Cordero’s Wife Says The Actor Continues To Improve But Is Still Battling A Lung Infection

Nick Cordero's wife continues to keep his fans and all those praying for him updated. Amanda Kloots has been documenting the Broadway star's battle with COVID-19. The 41-year-old had no preexisting health conditions when he was diagnosed with pneumonia in late March. He was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on March 31 and was diagnosed with COVID-19 the following day.

Nick has been unconscious since around that time. Complications have led to his right leg being amputated. He has also suffered two mini-strokes during this battle.

Things started to turn around on May 12. Amanda reported that Nick had finally awoken from his medically induced coma. He was even responding to commands. Fans were excited to celebrate Nick's first steps on the road to recovery.

Amanda's latest update explains that the actor isn't quite out of the woods just yet. In a recent video, Amanda explained that Nick is still facing issues due to the infection in his lungs. She's choosing to focus on the positive and remembering everything that Nick has already made it through, confident he's on his way to coming home.

Nick Cordero's battle with COVID-19 has been one of the most heartbreaking stories. The actor was first diagnosed with pneumonia on March 20. By the 31st, he was admitted into Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. The next day, he tested positive for COVID-19.

Nick was put on a ventilator after 24 hours in ICU. His condition went through a series of ups and downs during the first half of the month. Nick was also put on kidney dialysis and an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machine.

On April 18, Amanda shared with fans that Nick's right leg needed to be amputated. "We got some difficult news yesterday," she explained in an  Instagram story.

Amanda explained that Nick was put on blood thinners after there was clotting in his right leg. The blood thinners were causing issues with his blood pressure, as well as internal bleeding in his intestines.

"We took him off the blood thinners, but that again was going to cause the clotting in the right leg. So the right leg will be amputated today."

The next few weeks would see Nick go through even more challenges. In early May, Amanda shared a post that detailed what havoc COVID-19 had wreaked on Nick's body in a matter of weeks.

"What this man has gone through! Nick is 41 years old. He had no pre-existing health conditions. We do not know how he got COVID-19 but he did. He went to the ER on March 30th and intubated on a ventilator on April 1. Since then has he has suffered an infection that caused his heart to stop, he needed resuscitation, he had two mini strokes, went on ECMO, went on dialysis, needed surgery to removal an ECMO cannula that was restricting blood flow to his leg, a faciatomy to relieve pressure on the leg, an amputation of his right leg, an MRI to further investigate brain damage, several bronchial sweeps to clear out his lungs, a septis infection causing septic shock, a fungus in his lungs, holes in his lungs, a tracheostomy, blood clots, low blood count and platelet levels, and a temporary pacemaker to assist his heart. He has spent 38 days now in the ICU."

Despite being taken off of sedation in mid-April, Nick hadn't woken up from his medically induced coma. It was the moment family, friends, and fans were praying for. On May 12, their prayers were answered when Amanda shared news that Nick had finally woken up and was able to follow commands.

"Nick, Dada, is awake! Yay!" Amanda proclaimed in a video featuring the couple's 11-month-old son, Elvis Eduardo.

"Dada is awake. I asked the doctor today: 'Can we say he is awake?' He is awake."

Waking up was a very important first step in his recovery, but Amanda has been careful in pointing out it doesn't mean he's out of the woods yet.

On an Instagram Live session later that day, she explained why she's cautiously optimistic. "It's like you don't want to get yourself too excited because it's been such a road. But that's why I say it's a very long road still," Amanda explained.

"We are still in a very long road, but we are the beginnings of recovery. We are the beginnings of him waking up and the beginning of him following even more commands and being able to do more things."

Amanda hasn't been able to physically be with Nick in the hospital due to current restrictions. Her Mother's Day was made much brighter when she got to FaceTime with him. "I asked him to look up, and he did, and I asked him to look down, and he did," she happily reported.

"So that was a fantastic Mother's Day gift to start my day off with. I got really excited about it because it seemed to show that he could hear me and follow a command," she explained, noting it's still "very, very early."

On May 14, Amanda shared another update on Nick. She was happy to tell fans he's getting "a little stronger" with each passing day.

"His mental status is looking good," she shared. "He's getting better and better every day. A little stronger every day, so things are really looking great on that front."

Nick is still battling a lung infection. "We're still dealing with a lot of infection in his lungs so that is the overlying issue at the moment," she explained while answering fan questions on Nick's status.

"Infection in his lungs that we just have to get under control for Nick so that he can fully get the ventilator out of the trach and get off the ventilator and he can also get off dialysis. So, we're just waiting for that."

Thursday also had a special surprise for Nick. Sylvester Stallone recorded a special video message for Nick. It's extra significant because Amanda and his fans have been hoping for a Code Rocky, referring to the term health care workers use to describe coronavirus patients being discharged from the hospital following a full recovery.

"I know to have gotten as far as you have gotten, you've got what it takes," Sylvester said in the video.

"You have that eye of the tiger, you have that talent, you have that will. You have been dealt a horrible hand. Tough one. And it takes a strong, strong man and a strong family to override that situation," Sylvester continued.

"To take it and throw it back into life's face and say, 'Guess what? It's gonna take a lot more than that. I'm the man.' And you are the man. You're a role model for other people that have to overcome incredible odds. All I can say is keep punching — you're the man."

Nick has a long road to recovery ahead of him, but he has so many people cheering him on along the way. A GoFundMe campaign has been created to help Nick, Amanda, and Elvis as they navigate this overwhelming road ahead. It's unclear when the family will get to reunite, but it's sure to be a heartwarming moment after such a difficult journey.
