Police have racked up a bad rap sheet as of late. But we often forget that their main objective is to protect us, and because of this, they often do amazing things. Human things. Things that remind you that these brave men in blue have hearts warm enough to melt away any icy misconceptions.
Take Yonkers, New York’s former police captain, Joe Barca: In 1993, when he was still a sergeant, he got a call that changed his life — and the life of baby girl — forever. The infant wasn’t breathing and was clinging to life. Barca took the girl and checked for vital signs but couldn’t find any. But he wasn’t going to give up. He jumped into the back of an ambulance with the struggling girl and continued to give her CPR. Once they had arrived at the hospital, she was breathing on her own — Barca had saved her life!
“Her dad expected to hear the worst from me,” said Barca. “And I said to him ‘Do you hear that baby crying? … Well that’s your baby crying.’ And he just broke down from there.”
But the story doesn’t end there. To hear the heart-hugging conclusion — even more snuggly than a Snuggie fresh from the dryer — to this beautiful story, watch the video below!
