Just moments before he’s lifted from the ground, the man in the YouTube video below says, “Getting ready to launch the Coke uplift jetpack." Tied to his ankles are six big Coke bottles.
It’s unclear just how real this video is, but the idea he’s demonstrating isn’t actually new. It’s simply a reaction that occurs when Coke and Mentos are combined.
Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman of Discovery’s MythBusters explained what happens when the beverage and the candy mints are mixed together during an episode back in 2006.
The most common theory explaining what happens is called nucleation, Savage said.
“The surface of the candy is covered with microscopic pits and lots more surface area than you can actually see,” he explained. “And each little pit … provides what’s called a nucleation site, or a place where a carbon dioxide bubble can form and escape.”
The big explosion also occurs since Mentos sink, allowing the release of gas to happen at the bottom of the bottle.
Wait until you see his hilarious attempt at landing at :08!
