It’s sometimes difficult to see how quickly trends evolve until we’ve stuck them in a two-minute video to highlight the small absurdities of beauty regimens.
For example, a recent video went viral for its illustration of the way ideal body types for women is a moving target, consistently changing to reflect the desirability of pop culture icons. The full-bodied victorian era woman stands in stark contrast to the boyish and flat-chested body type desired in the Roaring Twenties. Examining how makeup trends have evolved over the course of history also places a proverbial mirror against traditional beauty standards set for women.
In the video below, we examine specifically how hair trends have shaped what’s attractive for the times. The “Gibson Girl,” curtain hair, or the "Marcel wave" …are these hairstyles you’ve ever heard before today? Because, at the beginning of the 20th century, these were among the most-desired styles for women. How about the flat top for men? And barrel curls? I think I speak for all of us when I say thank goodness that’s no longer a requirement for leaving the house. And victory curls of the 1940s are a look I’m sure many of us would prefer to leave in the past.
Would you wear any of these styles?
