Luis Suarez has had his share of controversy on the soccer field, including making headlines for biting his opponents. But, he appears to be an empathetic guy when he’s not in competition.
The FC Barcelona striker surprised a young fan named Mateo in collaboration with Fundación Pérez Scremini, a Uruguayan foundation fighting childhood cancer.
Mateo, who has been battling cancer for two years, had no idea that he’d be speaking to his idol. Like soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo, who made a fan's day by sticking up for him, Suarez also affected Mateo in a positive way.
“Well, today we thought about a surprise for Mateo,” his physician Dr. Dabezies says. “We’ll tell him he has a consultation with a Spanish doctor. What he doesn’t know is that the doctor is not a doctor.”
As Mateo sits in a room with Dr. Dabezies, he engages in a video chat with a man he thinks is Dr. Federico Gonzalez. At first the computer screen is black, but when Suarez shows his face, Mateo’s reaction at the 1:27 mark is priceless.
“I’m moved,” he tells the famous star.
The fellow Uruguayan also gives Mateo words of encouragement telling him, “You are very brave, a fighter, so you must keep on going."
He then offers Mateo the ultimate gift for any soccer fan, which makes him break down even more.
